There’s a loud buzz coming from 29 N. Oakes. What’s happening at that church there? Sounds like a swarm of bees ready to take flight. Or could it be the Spirit coming down? After all, it was just now Pentecost Sunday, and the church celebrated the first official sermon of new senior minister, Rev. T.J. Shoop-York at both the progressive and traditional services. The fellowship hall and sanctuary hummed with 92 worshippers for the 9:00 a.m. service and 130 at 11:00. Sister church Grace Presbyterian Chapel joined us at both services. That afternoon, 12 of our youth buzzed away for a week of more excitement at church camp on Lake Brownwood.
In the week leading up, the humming came from those who coordinated a special luncheon to mark the occasion and further welcome T.J.’s family—his wife Heather and baby son Ryder. We couldn’t all just say “adios” and go home after an inspiring sermon, “The Living Water: God’s Calling to Deeper Water”—more bread needed breaking. And Duff Hallman got a chance to present an honorary shepherd’s crook to our new minister, with the reminder that “sheep aren’t very smart.” Earlier in the week, 36 folks—parents, children, and youth—met at T.J. and Heather’s house for pizza, games, and fellowship to prime the pump. Also that week, the Monday food pantry served 54 families. T.J. calls it the Hallway Grocery Store. The Spirit lives and energy radiates at First Christian Church, D.O.C.! Join us! All are welcome!
